WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi's boys tennis team had no problem in shutting out visiting Southridge Friday, 7-0.

"This was not a bad showing for our season-opening dual match against the Suns of Southridge," Wa-Hi coach Ted Cummings said. "It was obvious from the first stroke that the Blue Devils were ‘ready to rock' following our great team performance last weekend (at the Yakima Coke Classic, where Wa-Hi placed second). Each player was coming off three matches of play last Saturday and showed great confidence and poise against the Suns, who had their first taste of competition for the season (on Friday)."

Blake Rowley, Josh Kuznetsov, Drew Swenson and Zack Anderson all picked up singles victories.

In doubles play, John Meliah teamed with Doug Rowley, Lane Dawes with Connor Christensen and Drew Bateman with Nick Fuller for wins.

"The 1-2-3 singles punch of senior Blake Rowley, sophomore Josh Kuznetsov and senior Drew Swenson had to feel overwhelming to Southridge as our guys dropped an average of just over three games in those matches," Cummings said, "while our newcomer to varsity, junior Zack Anderson, finished strongly in a 7-5, 7-6 win over a veteran Parker Dickin.

"Our doubles teams appear to be in sync despite experimenting with three new combinations since last weekend's play," he said.

"With our historic strength in doubles and and solid group of singles guys, we should experience some great success this season."

Wa-Hi travels to Davis Thursday.
