SAN DIEGO - Geoff Burks and Andrew Welch shot matching rounds of 79 as the Whitman College men's golf team battled Redlands in a Tuesday dual match at the Maderas Golf Club in San Diego.
Redlands, which holds a No. 4 national ranking in NCAA Division III, carded a team score of 293. Whitman finished at 321.
Jeremy Gomburg shot even par 72 to claim medalist honors, edging three teammates who finished just one or two strokes off the pace.
"It was a great tournament for us because we had the chance to compete against one of the top Division III teams in the nation," Whitman coach Peter McClure said.
"We were able to identify parts of our games that we can work on, and we can use what we learned to prepare for our next tournament."
Scott Martin and Jonathan Standen rounded out Whitman's team score, shooting rounds of 81 and 82, respectively.
Also playing for Whitman were Cheney Doane 87, John Abercrombie 92, and Nathan Fisher 92.
The two teams played in temperatures in the 65- to 70-degree range, which was a marked contrast to the rain and cold wind that canceled last weekend's St. Paddy Day's Invitational, which Redlands had tried to host.
Whitman hosts its next competition - the Northwest Spring Classic. That two-day, 36-hole tournament starts Saturday, March 31, at the Wildhorse Golf Course in Mission, Ore.
