May 29, 1917 - Feb. 29, 2012
Lois A. VanDeGrift, aged 94, passed away on Feb. 29, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. Born May 29, 1917, in Forbes, Colo., she was the seventh of 11 children. As a middle child in a large Scottish family she developed a nimble wit, the source of the twinkle in her eyes. After high school she moved to California to enter college and to work as a nursemaid. Her love of children was the guiding star in her life.
After marriage to R. Deal VanDeGrift she supported his ministry through seven Nazarene pastorates in California, Oregon and Washington. She had an affinity for working with teens, loved singing hymns and was regular in her daily prayers and devotions. In spite of many hardships and illnesses, her values and her faith never wavered. She maintained her joy in fun, pranks and laughter.
Lois had an eye for detail, whether keeping a spotless home, arranging gladioli, or decorating the Christmas tree and wrapping packages. The handwork of her quilts, crochet and knitting was top notch, and so was her cooking. As with many women of her generation she canned or froze everything from apple butter to tomatoes. She was a prize-winning Avon sales lady.
The love of her life was her husband Deal, with whom she enjoyed 72 years of married life. In their retirement they towed their travel trailer around the West, camping in national parks with their dog.
Lois is survived by her husband, Deal; brother, Royal Anderson; sister, Pauline Corning; son, David (Elinor) Vandegrift; and daughter, Susanne (Dean) Weathers.
A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, April 4, at 2 p.m. at Judson Park Retirement Community, 23600 Marine View Drive S., Des Moines, WA 98198. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Judson Park Foundation at the address listed above.
