On the March 19 work session a second city presentation was given in support of an aquatic center for Walla Walla.
Unfortunately none of the public comment given at the previous session had been incorporated. While slides and waves might be nice, what the community is really looking for is a pool!
A real swimming pool would be used by many for lessons, lap swimming and water sports. Having a 25- or 50-meter pool makes local water fitness an option.
My family has never been involved in swim team but we were daily visitors to Memorial Pool for over 20 years. The proposed aquatic center has slides, a wave pool, kiddy area, lazy river, but no place to swim.
It creates an outdoor entertainment option for youth, but it does not support health and fitness goals for kids, adults and seniors.
To get my vote, the aquatic center must include a swimming pool.
The Sherwood Trust has also been mentioned as a possible funding source for the project. For community grants of capital projects one of the Sherwood Trust requirements is, "a widespread or high percentage community use."
I hope we can avoid the embarrassment of another failed levy and I urge the city to take public comment and future use in mind and present Walla Walla a plan that includes a pool for everyone.
