JOHN DAY, Ore. - The Mac-Hi Pioneers baseball team beat Madras and Junction City Friday at the Grant Union tournament by scores of 15-12 and 12-2.
The Pioneers faltered Saturday and lost to Crook County, 9-2, in the tournament.
"We faced a good team in Crook County," Mac-Hi coach Mike Garcia said, "We knew they had good pitchers and hitters. Offensively and defensively, it was completely different stories for us Friday and Saturday. Friday we hit better and fielded better. We faced tougher competition Saturday too."
Crook County used four different pitchers Saturday and according to Garcia, they brought in a new pitcher each time the lineup turned over.
Five different Pioneers had one hit apiece in the game and Mac-Hi could only muster two runs. Troy Kessler pitched the first three innings and Patrick Sheets finished up the game on the mound for the Pioneers.
"We hit the ball well in the two games," Garcia said. "We were patient, looking for our pitch and were knocking the ball into the gaps. Junction City and Madras were good competition but we hit the ball really well."
In the two victories, the Pioneers pounded out 27 runs on 38 hits.
Jake Morris had five hits in game two and two in the opener.
Dylan Shuler and Troy Kessler had five hits total.
Kevin Cuellar pitched a complete game versus Junction City and struck out five while walking three.
The Pioneers are 4-2 in the early season.
They host Stanfield Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
