POMEROY - A pair of walk-off victories for Pomeroy capped its Saturday double header, as the Pirates won, 10-9 and 19-18, against Garfield-Palouse.
In game one, the Pirates trailed by three runs going into the bottom of the seventh. Pomeroy used Havin Heytvelt and Nick Tewalt hits to fuel a four-run rally sandwiched around three walks and an error.
In game two, Pomeroy found themselves behind by two runs heading into their final at-bat, but found a way to win again. Heytvelt picked up a base on balls, stole second and a single sent him to third. Ryan Smith knocked in a run on a grounder to shortstop that was mishandled.
Tewalt singled in another run and Smith came around to score the winning run on a wild pitch.
"(In) both games, we were down and really happy to come up with wins," Pirates coach Dave Boyer said. "We kept our heads in the game, kept scrapping and getting on base one way or another. I was really happy with our team's ability to stay focused and make things happen."
In his first high school game Heytvelt - an eighth grader - got on base six times, stole six bases and scored six runs in the opening of the twin bill.
In game two, Smith had four hits and four RBI's.
"He had the big stick for the day at the plate," Boyer added.
The second game saw 30 walks between the two teams, as each team struggled to find a pitcher to throw strikes.
Errors were also a problem with Gar-Pal committing 10 and Pomeroy nine.
