Atkinson leads Blue Devil boys golfers to fifth

KENNEWICK - Wa-Hi's Dean Atkinson carded a 79 to finish 12th and lead the Blue Devils to a fifth-place finish at the Southridge Invite at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick Wednesday.

Wa-Hi coach James Smith said he was pleased with his team's performance.

"We cut 20 strokes off the last time we were out," Smith said. "We finally got somebody in the 70s, and that's not an easy golf course. We probably could have done a little bit better had we putted better."

Nic Atwood finished the course in 84 strokes to take Wa-Hi's second best score. Gunnar Leighty carded an 87, Dakota Reiswig a 90, and Cameron Mountain a 100.

"All of our kids, with exception of one, played better," Smith said. That was nice to see, especially on a golf course like that one.

"The sun was shining, the wind was about 25 miles per hour," he said. "Playing conditions were pretty good for this time of the year."

The Blue Devils host a Big Nine Invitational April 9 at the Wine Valley Golf Course, with tee times starting at noon.
