PASCO - Wa-Hi took a 7-0 decision from the Chiawana Riverhawks in Big Nine conference boys' action tennis Wednesday.
"With a younger opponent today - in experience and age - the Blue Devils taught the Riverhawks a lesson, or two, with very decisive victories in five of the seven matches in Pasco," Wa-Hi coach Ted Cummings said in an e-mail.
Wa-Hi's Blake Rowley and Drew Swenson, at No. 1 and No.2, respectively, won their matches in straight sets. Rowley was perfect in the victory, while Swenson dropped a single game in the second set.
Rowley, along with Parker Postelwait who battled to a 2-1 victory over Alejandro Rojas in the No. 3 spot, was seeing his first action in varsity singles.
"We altered the lineup a bit as senior Parker Postlewait and sophomore Doug Rowley got a taste of varsity singles ... and came through with some pretty good play," Cummings said. "I liked the way these ‘doubles specialists' incorporated their agressive style of net play into the singles arena.
"I'm sure the guys now believe that hard work really pays off, as Drew raised his singles record to seven wins and no losses while Blake is a respectable 5-2 at No. 1 singles," Cummings said. "The team record is pretty satisfying at 4-0."
The Blue Devils didn't lose a set on the doubles side.
Nick Fuller filled in for missing Blue Devils in the No. 3 doubles admirably, Cummings said.
"We had a few boys not available to play today and I'm pleased the way Nick Fuller filled in and excelled in No. 3 doubles with Lane Dawes in a 6-3, 6-1 win," he said.
