Raising funds to benefit the community, members of Junior Club of Walla Walla will host their annual bunco event on April 20.

It will be at Assumption Parish Hall, 2098 E. Alder St. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and play will begin at 7 p.m.

Junior Club will offer prizes it's gathered from sponsors L'Ecole No. 41, Beehive Hairhouse, Mary Kay cosmetics, Salumiere Cesario and others. Raffle drawings will be held throughout the evening.

"The appeal of the game lies in the social time it provides for people -- it's a lot of fun and easy to learn, and by the end you've mingled with almost everyone in the room," said Colby Burke, Junior Club president.

The $20-per-person tickets include desserts, cheeses and one glass of wine (for ages 21 and over) or other beverages. Tickets can be purchased from any Junior Club member, at Salumiere Cesario, 20 N. Second Ave. or by calling Sara Wutzke at 503-830-0088.

Junior Club donates proceeds from its fundraisers to nonprofit organizations such as Books for Babes, Habitat for Humanity, Friends of Children of Walla Walla, YWCA, Walla Walla Community Hospice and Herring House, and provides scholarships for deserving local women.

A construction project of sorts is under way at United Way of Walla Walla County.

The local campaign aims to "Bridge the Gap" between its current total and its goal of $460,000.

"Thanks to the generosity of many contributors, we have already raised nearly $415,000! Now we need your help to close the final gap," local United Way Executive Director Liz McDevitt said in a release.

"The needs in our community are significant and your donation will make a huge impact on our ability to meet these growing needs," she said.

In the next several weeks, local folks will meet to determine how best to distribute funds raised in the campaign, Liz said.

"They will be faced with very tough decisions. A shortfall in our campaign will make those decisions more difficult as they try to answer questions such as 'Where do we cut back? Assistance to homebound seniors? Affordable childcare? Help to families in crisis?'" she said.

"Generous hearts reflected through small or large donations are encouraged. Together we can Bridge the Gap, reach our goal, and improve more lives - right here in Walla Walla County."

Donations may be made online at or by mail to P.O. Box 1134, Walla Walla, WA 99362.
