State poet laureate to read Thursday at WWU

COLLEGE PLACE -- Washington State Poet Laureate Kathleen Flenniken will be at Walla Walla University on Thursday to present poetry readings.

Flenniken will be reading her own poetry and the work of local poets at 7:30 p.m. in Chan Shun room 154 on the college campus.

Flenniken was named the state's poet laureate in February, and will serve a two-year term as the primary spokesperson, supporter and promoter of poetry in the state. The position is sponsored by Humanities Washington and the Washington State Arts Commission. It is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities Washington.

Flenniken began writing poetry as a stay-at-home mother after eight years working as a civil engineer and hydrologist. Her first book, "Famous," features selections centered on her daily domestic life. It won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry, was named a Notable Book by the American Library Association, and was a finalist for the Washington State Book Award.
