Wa-Hi downs Chiawana, falls to Panthers

The Blue Devil baseball team advances to play Davis in round two of district play Saturday.

WENATCHEE - Wa-Hi's baseball team advanced to the double-elimination portion of the district tournament with an 8-2 victory over Chiawana here Tuesday in a loser-out game.

That pitted the Blue Devils against Big Nine No. 1 seed Wenatchee for a berth in the district title game on Saturday.

Wa-Hi plated two runs in the second inning, but Panthers first baseman C.J. Gettman laced a two-out, bases-clearing double just past the reach of Blue Devil left fielder Cody Furstenberg in the third inning to give Wenatchee a 3-2 lead, and the Panthers held on for the victory of that margin.

"Game two was a great high school baseball game," Wa-Hi coach Keith Gradwohl said. "Moe Handcox made two spectacular plays - cutting off a ball hit into the right-center field gap and throwing the base runner out at second and then making a running, over-the-shoulder catch up against they ivy-laden center field fence.

"We battled off of one of the best pitchers in the state (Wenatchee's Dustin Driver) and just came up short."

In the opener, Wa-Hi's speed took center stage as the Blue Devils stole five bases. Handcox and Josh Eggers both had two steals and Furstenberg one.

Wa-Hi scored once in the first inning, four in the third and three in the fourth, while Luke Reardon picked up his fifth win of the season with a complete-game two-hitter.

"Game one was characterized by running the bases like bandits!" Gradwohl said. "We put a lot of pressure on the Chiawana defense."

In the second game, Wa-Hi's Spencer Locati and Wenatchee's Driver "locked up in an old fashioned pitcher's duel," Gradwohl said.

Locati gave up five hits in and the three runs in the duel, while Driver allowed three hits and two runs.

The Blue Devils put the potential go-ahead run on first base in the seventh inning, but the rally was squelched on a flyout to center.

Wa-Hi now plays Davis in a loser-out game at 1 p.m Saturday, with the victor advancing to the sub-regionals on Tuesday.
