WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi's boys tennis team downed Hermiston, 6-3, here Tuesday.
"Wa Hi entertained the Bulldogs of Hermiston with an extended lineup to accommodate players in the junior varsity program, and walked away with a 6-3 win on Tuesday in Walla Walla," Blue Devil coach Ted Cummings said. "The opponents only had four boys in their JV program, so we combined teams and went with five doubles matches rather than the regular three, so it was a good opportunity to see our three top JV players (Nate Gallinat, Malcolm Gabbard and Mark VanDyke) perform under pressure.
"The Blue Devils' top-end strength (Nos. 1, 2 and 3) gave us a 3-1 lead going into doubles play, where the boys won three of the five matches to secure our eighth win of the season against only two losses," he said. "Blake Rowley overcame a slow start to earn his 10th win of the season in the No. 1 slot. At 4-all in the third-set tiebreak, he played three solid points to edge Dain Lloyd, 7-4.
"Drew Swenson continued his dominant play at No. 2 singles and boosted his record to 14 wins with only three losses," Cummings said. "Zack Anderson wrestled out his 12th win of the season with only three losses in straight sets.
"It's been 11 days since our last match play, so I'm glad we kicked off some rust today."
Wa Hi, 8-2 on the season, hosts Kamiakin at 3 p.m. Thursday.
