Mac-Hi, Baker still tied after split

BAKER - In a battle for first place in the Greater Oregon League, Haley Freske came off the Mac-Hi bench in the top of the eighth inning Friday in the Pioneers doubleheader with Baker.

Freske connected to break a 5-5 tie and Collette Robert retired Baker in the bottom of the eighth as Mac-Hi claimed a 6-5 win and salvaged a split of the GOL twin bill.

Baker got home runs from Jessie Stephens and Abi Smith to pull out a 4-2 win in the opener.

In the night cap, the Bulldogs hit three more long balls as Stephens, DJ McCauley, and Taylor McAdams connected to lead Baker to a 5-4 lead after four.

Karli Cortez answered for the Pioneers in the top of the sixth. Cortez' long ball tied it at 5-5 and the teams exchanged goose eggs until Freske's game winner in the eighth.

"The second game was a real battle," Pioneer coach Nicole Christian said. "It was back and forth. We left a lot of runners on base in the first game. They were a great couple of games to watch."

Cortez led the Pioneer offense with three hits on the afternoon.

Baker and Mac-Hi, with the split, remain tied atop the GOL, both with 8-2 records with two GOL games left. The Pioneers host Ontario at 1 p.m. Saturday. Baker gets La Grande to close out the regular season campaign on Friday.
