WALLA WALLA - On the eve of its first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III national championships, the Whitman College women's tennis team has jumped into the national rankings.
The latest rankings, released late last week by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), plugs Whitman into the No. 29 slot.
The Missionaries also continued a season-long climb up the West Region rankings, moving to No. 7.
Whitman, which takes a 17-4 record into the national championships, is the highest ranked team from the Northwest Conference.
"It's exciting to chart our team's progress (in the rankings) from my first season when we were No. 15 in the west," fourth-year Whitman coach John Hein said. "Then we moved to 12th in my second year and finished last year in the top 10."
The latest West Region rankings also show junior Alyssa Roberg at No. 2 in singles. First-year teammate Courtney Lawless is No. 4 in singles, and the two players are No. 2 in the region as a doubles duo.
