LA GRANDE - DeSales kept the rust off headed to the district championship game against Asotin on Saturday by heading to La Grande Tuesday afternoon.
The Irish took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, but the Tigers tied it up in the sixth and plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to take the 3-2 victory.
"I like that we play before district," DeSales coach Kim Cox said. "They're a pretty good team, they play the game right."
The Irish put up their two runs in the fourth as Logan Hoeft doubled and Kyler Pommerening singled before Adam Eskil knocked an RBI sacrifice fly. DeSales took advantage of a bases loaded walk for its second run.
La Grande used a couple of Irish passed balls to tie it up and then win the game. A Seth Madsen sixth-inning walk was followed by a Tiger double to left-center, and then scored on a groundout. An Irish passed ball tied it up.
In the bottom of the seventh, a La Grande walk was followed by another passed ball and then a bunt to get the Tigers runner to third. A sac fly plated the winning run.
"We had lots of chances," Cox said. "We left a lot of runners in scoring position, but we were not able to knock them in."
DeSales, now 17-2 overall and 11-1 in Southeast 2B play, face Asotin at 4 p.m. Saturday at Borleske Stadium for seeding to the regional tournament. The winner stays in Walla Walla for the regional, with the loser heading to Spokane.
