Touchet pitching overcomes defensive problems

The Indians suffer 14 errors, but still sweep Gar-Pal in SE1B softball play.

TOUCHET - The Touchet defense was porous Wednesday, but clutch hitting and strong pitching made up for 14 errors in two games as the Indians swept Garfield-Palouse, 5-1 and 9-8, in a Southeast 1B softball doubleheader.

"We didn't play a very sound defensive game against these guys in either game," Touchet coach Gary Dorman said. "I was a little disappointed in our defense. Our pitchers did extremely well."

Nicole Brown got the start for Touchet in the first game and went the distance, scattering five hits in six innings. Gar-Pal got on the board with a run in the first inning, but Brown shut the Vikings out the rest of the way.

Gar-Pal got a jump on Touchet early in the second game.

With MaKayla Bishop in the circle instead of her normal position at shortstop, the Indians gave up eight runs over the first four innings.

Despite the defense giving up five errors in the first inning alone, Bishop didn't crack.

"She never lost her composure," Dorman said of Bishop. "She threw strikes. She didn't get a lot of strikeouts, but she only walked one girl. She did a good job of battling, even with all the errors."

The Indians began to claw their way back in the third inning, when Morgan Cardwell singled with runners at second and third and two outs to pick up a pair of RBIs.

Touchet answered a four-run Gar-Pal rally in the top of the fourth with a four-run rally of its own in the bottom of the next inning, and a run in the sixth inning brought the score to 8-all.

Bishop and the Indians held the Vikings scoreless in the top of the ninth, and Bishop helped her own cause in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly to score the winning run.

The sweep moves Touchet to 12-5 and 8-4 in the SE1B.

Touchet and Gar-Pal have a rematch in the first round of the District 9 playoffs Tuesday. The winner earns a berth into the state playoffs, but will face the winner of the Colton-Pomeroy game, also Tuesday, to determine seeding.
