WALLA WALLA - The Walla Walla Gun Club is holding a rare event in these parts.
A swap meet - or flea market depending on who you ask - is the club's latest fundraiser.
"We realized we got all this space in Walla Walla, so we thought we would put it to good use," club member Jerry Taylor said.
About a dozen vendors signed up to sell this weekend, each paying $30 for all three days.
The crowd on the outside of the grounds was huge, as about 100 cars lined up near the entrance to the gun club on Middle Waitsburg road to watch hot air balloons land on secured airport grounds.
However, Walla Walla Regional Airport security kept the gate to the gun club closed, fearing the multitude of spectators would breech airport security.
Gun Club secretary Bob Bloch said he is sure the swap meet could take off as a regular fundraiser, just not on Balloon Stampede weekend.
"I think we are going to try to coordinate with the race track and have more of these events during the same time as races," Bloch said. "Everybody wants a flea market. It's just a matter of who are you going to get to get it done. It's a good first start. We had good initial interest."
The Walla Walla Gun Club swap meet opens today at 8 a.m. at 1212 Middle Waitsburg Road.
