WALLA WALLA - DeSales' softball team split a non-league twin bill with visiting Irrigon Friday in preparation for Friday's District 9 championship game against Waitsburg-Prescott.
The Irish fell, 17-8, in the opener before shutting out the Knights, 10-0, in the nightcap.
"In the first game, we committed some mental mistakes that allowed Irrigon to capitalize," DeSales coach Russ Vera said. "We were down 11-2 in the fifth and the girls didn't give up and came back and scored six runs in the sixth.
"Teresa Acock had two huge hits for us in the game," he said. "We played most of our reserves in the first game to get them some playing time. We have some players injured and we wanted to give them a rest, and even though we were down the girls never gave up. I was proud of how the girls played - they never gave up.
"In the second game, we had our starting lineup out on the field and to 10-run-rule a team like Irrigon shows that we can play with any team," Vera said. "We had Molli Lesko with two hits, she has really been stepping up with her hitting. Bobbie Prior also had three hits.
"Ashlyn Lyons threw a shutout with five strikeouts," he said. "This was a good tune up for us before the district tournament."
The Irish, now 15-5 overall, 10-2 in Southeast 2B league, play W-P for the district title at 6 p.m. Friday at TRAC in Pasco. The winner takes the No. 1 seed to state, the loser the No. 2 seed.
