WALLA WALLA -- At the recommendation of the City's Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, the City Council has issued a proclamation that the May is "Bicycle Safety Month".

To help get the safety message out to the bicycling community, patrol officers will step up contacts with bicyclists observed violating the "rules of the road," according to a news release.

Bicycle riders are required by law to obey all the same traffic laws that apply to the motoring public.

These include riding with lights after dark, obeying all traffic control devices (stop signs and traffic lights) and traveling with the flow of traffic.Bicycles are also not allowed to ride on the sidewalks in the downtown core area of the city.
