LA GRANDE - Mac-Hi won a seeding game for the state softball tournament, 1-0, over the Baker Bulldogs at Eastern Oregon University here Monday.
"Baker and Mac-Hi were co-champs for our conference (the Greater Oregon League), and this was not only a seeding game but I think a little bragging rights for our girls," Pioneers coach Nicole Christian said. "I'm so proud of the girls with the effort they put out today."
Kaitlin Erm pitched into the fifth inning, and was relieved by Colette Robert. The duo held the Bulldogs to four hits.
"The 1-2 punch of Kaitlin shutting down Baker for five innings and Colette coming in throwing heat to keep Baker to only four hits was great to see," Christian said. "These two girls complement each other and are a great weapon together on the mound.
"Baker had five runs off our pitchers over there (during the regular season) and last night it was a huge turnaround for us," she said. "Our two pitchers shut down the bats of Baker. Our defense picked up any other threats Baker put into play.
"Brianna Crewse had a great diving play in center to keep one of Baker's top hitters off the bases," Christian said.
"Mac-Hi left some runners on today, but in the top of the fourth Kariss Carrillo led off with a single and, with a deep shot to the fence by Colette, she was able to score with her speed," she said. "We had six runners left on base that we just couldn't get that timely hit. So we have a few things we need to work on before our play-in game this week."
The Pioneers next host Philomath, either Friday or Saturday. The winner advances to the 16-team state tournament, with ranking determining where teams play.
