Patterson girls golf co-coach of year; Huntsman on first team

WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi girls' golf coach Mike Patterson was named co-coach of the year for the Columbia Basin Big Nine Monday after coaching the Blue Devils to a third-place finish in both the regular season and at the district tournament.

Wa-Hi also landed three girls on all-conference teams, with sophomore Jessica Huntsman capping a breakout season with selection to the CBBN first team.

Huntsman's average (79.7) during the regular season was second only to Big Nine golfer of the year Kristin Strankman's (75) and almost seven strokes better than the next-best golfer.

She was also the runner up in the individual points scored category, with 268 points to 292.5 from Strankman.

Wa-Hi's Kendall Dunovant, a sophomore, was selected to the CBBN second team after averaging 100.7 strokes this season.

She missed the cut to go to state this season by six strokes after carding a 98 at the district tournament.

Marisa Jimenez, also a sophomore, earned honorable mention from the Big Nine after averaging 107.2 during the regular season.

Hunstman has an opportunity to pick up more accolades when she travels to MeadowWoods Golf Course in Spokane for the state tournament next week.

The CBBN boys' all-conference selections were also released Monday.

Blue Devil Dean Atkinson was named to the first team, while Nick Atwood took second team honors and Gunnar Leighty received honorable mention.

Atkinson and Atwood both advanced to the state tournament in Spokane next week at Hangman Valley Golf Course.
