SPOKANE - Touchet's baseball team ended its season on a heart-breaking note, falling to Odessa-Harrington, 10-9, in regional play at Central Valley High Saturday.

"If we'd played a little better defensively behind (Touchet pitcher Nate Ortiz), it was certainly a game we could have won," Indians coach Wayne Dickey said.

Ortiz went the distance for Touchet, recording five strikeouts, giving up six walks and eight hits.

But the Indians suffered five errors in the game, leading to five unearned runs for Odessa-Harrington.

Touchet opened the game with a four-run first inning.

But the Titans answered with five runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.

"We hit the ball, but they came right back," Dickey said. "We had one error in that inning, and gave up one unearned run."

The Indians responded with four more runs in the second, and held the 8-5 lead until the Titans plated three runs in the third to tie it up.

Undaunted, Touchet scored the go-ahead run in the fourth, only to watch Odessa-Harrington answer to knot it at 9-all.

The Titans scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth and held on for the win. They played Colton for the right to play for the state championship next weekend.

Jose Martinez was 2-for-3 with 4 RBI on the day for the Indians, including a 2-RBI double in the first inning.

Ortiz backed his complete game on the mound by going 3-for-5 with an RBI.

"Nate had a good game," Dickey said.

Elias Martinez and Octavio Preciado also had a pair of hits for Touchet in the game.

While the Indians' season comes to a close with an overall record of 6-11, Dickey said optimism for the future abounds.

"We had a lot of issues over the season with injuries and other things, but the kids really bounced back the latter part of the season," he said. "We have only one senior, Eric Hines, that we lose to graduation. Certainly we'll miss him next year, but I think our team should be pretty solid the next couple of years."
