Weston, Milton-Freewater educators win Crystal Apples

Six Valley educators are among this year's recipients of the 2012 Crystal Apple Awards.

They are among 36 being recognized Wednesday at the Red Lion in Pendleton for "Excellence in Education." Winners are from the InterMountain Education Service District, representing Umatilla and Morrow county educators.

Local winners are Ann Vescio, fifth-grade teacher at Weston Middle School and Julie Harper, para-professional at Weston Middle School

Milton-Freewater winners are Chip Ambler, fifth-grade teacher at Freewater Elementary; Alexis Bergevin, head of the math department and testing coordinator at McLoughlin High School; Ray Kelso, para-professional at Central Middle School; and Donna Geissel, para-professional at Ferndale Elementary.

The award honors educators and staff for their commitment to students, as well as their abilities to go above and beyond the call of duty in their schools, according to a news release. Nominations are submitted over a two-month period by administrators, coworkers, parents, students and community members. Winners are selected from these nominees by school district office administration.

This year marks the 13th year of presenting dedicated employees with crystal apples. The awards ceremony is being held at the Pendleton Red Lion.
