Dayton's Harting pitches no-hitter in 1-0 win

YAKIMA - A single run scored on an infield fly in the first inning was all Dayton pitcher Sam Harting needed to pick up a win in the first round of the WIAA Class 2B softball playoffs Friday at Yakima's Gateway Sports Complex.

The junior pitcher wasn't perfect - she did walk eight batters - but, more importantly, she struck out nine and pitched a no-hitter as the Bulldogs advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a 1-0 win.

The win didn't come without giving Harting a fit of butterflies, however.

After two groundouts to start the bottom of the seventh, Warden center fielder Tawnie Gonsalez took a base on balls to represent the tying run. She proceeded to steal both second and third bases.

With state on the line, Harting threw a full-count strike to Warden's Haley Yamane to seal the victory.

Dayton faces Adna in the second round of the playoffs tonight at 7 p.m.
