YAKIMA - Waitsburg-Prescott got off to a better start in its second game at the WIAA Class 2B softball playoffs Friday, leaping out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but the result was much the same as W-P's earlier loss as a nine-run third inning led to a 13-3 loss to Warden.
The loss ends W-P's season at 15-7 and, although disappointed by the losses, W-P coach Angie Potts said the team accomplished what it set out to do - make state.
W-P's Heidi Miller was hit by a pitch and Rhiannon Chapman singled to put two runners on in the top of the second inning. Chapman advanced home thanks to a passed ball and Miller scored on an RBI single from Sam Moss to give W-P a 2-0 lead - its first of the day.
But the lead wasn't to last. Warden capitalized on a pair of errors to score three runs in the bottom of the inning and batted around the lineup in the fourth thanks to an eye-popping eight errors.
W-P answered with a run in the fourth, but was unable to stave off a mercy-rule ending thanks to a Warden run in the bottom of the inning.
Waitsburg-Prescott graduates just two seniors - catcher Dionna Baker and center fielder Hailey Goenen - and will look to make another run at state next season with six juniors returning from this season looking for a shot at the title.
