Dayton outslugs Pateros, falls to Napavine

YAKIMA - Dayton outscored the Pateros Nannies, 16-14, and lost a slugfest, 15-7, versus the Napavine Tigers here Saturday at the Gateway Sports Complex at the state 2B softball tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the state tourney at 2-2.

"It was a great season," Dayton assistant coach Desirae Jones said. "It was quite an accomplishment for the girls to finish the season with two wins at the state tournament."

The Bulldogs pummeled Pateros early, taking a 16-2 lead into the bottom of the third inning.

In the third, Dayton had eight of the nine players in the lineup score at least one run on three hits, five walks and three Pateros errors.

The rally was highlighted by a McKayla Bickelhaupt two-RBI single. She finished the game with six RBI on three hits.

After the Dayton 10-run third inning, the Nannies began to chip away at the lead.

The Nannies scored four in the bottom of third, six in the fourth and two in fifth to pull within two runs.

"It wasn't really a matter of us making errors," Jones said. "Pateros just came back and hit the ball really well. It took a lot out of us but we stood up and stopped them in the end."

The Bulldogs were able to close the door and retire the Pateros side in order in both the sixth and seventh to preserve the win.

Dayton's Sam Harting stayed in circle and withstood the rally to pick up the win. She finished with three strikeouts and four walks.

Against Napavine, Harting threw another complete game but came up on the losing side after Dayton committed nine errors.

"We gave up way too many errors and unearned runs," Jones said. "It was a long weekend and the girls did OK against Napavine but they just didn't quite follow through."

Dayton got down 8-0 against the Tigers, and rallied in the final four innings to put seven total runs but still lose.

Nicole Lambert and Lexus Ward smacked two hits in the game

"The girls got hits when they needed to do so," Jones said, "and their best in the field. There were several great plays to be proud of in this tournament."
