YAKIMA - Touchet finished the 2012 season on a strong note at the Gateway Sports Complex in 1B state tournament Saturday, taking home a fourth place trophy after falling to Selkirk in the consolation final.
"We'll take the trophy home happily," Touchet coach Gary Dorman said. "After not making it into the tournament last year, we really have nothing to be ashamed of."
The Indians finished the tournament at 2-2.
In the nightcap Saturday, Touchet fell 15-4 to the Selkirk Rangers in five innings.
On Saturday afternoon, Touchet triumphed over the Curlew Cougars 12-4, with the help of 10-run Indian rally in the first inning.
"In that first game, Saturday, we came out and put up eight straight singles against Curlew and scored ten runs in one inning," Dorman said. "Everybody in the lineup had a hit before that first inning was over."
The Indians sent 15 batters to the plate before the inning was over.
Touchet's catcher Josie Sewell had four hits in the game while pitcher Nicole Brown had three.
The Indians' Morgan Cardwell added two hits in the game.
"It was the tale of two games," Dorman said. "We had ten runs scored for us against Curlew in one inning and ten runs scored on us in the second game on Saturday against Selkirk.
"... It just happens sometimes for you, and against you, in your career - all the runs in one inning."
It was 5-1, Rangers over Indians, in the top of the fourth when Selkirk struck for ten runs.
The Rangers had nine hits in the rally but only one extra-base hit.
The Indians recovered for three runs of their own but it wasn't enough. The mercy rule was enacted after five innings.
The season may have ended on a bit of a sour note, but Touchet returns seven starters for next season.
"We're really happy with the season and we should have a good nucleus coming back to make a run next year," Dorman said.
