WALLA WALLA -- Thirteen-year-old Noah Gast suffered a broken jaw and leg after he rode his bike into the side of an oncoming SUV on Monday evening, police said.
Gast was riding his bike east on Alder Street when he apparently attempted to turn onto Bridge Street, crossing two lanes of traffic. Gast struck the passenger-side front panel of a westbound Ford Explorer.
"There was nothing (the driver) could do to avoid the collision," said Officer Tim Bennett, spokesman for the Walla Walla Police Department. "(Gast) was wearing a bike helmet, which likely saved his life."
Bennett said Gast caught his foot in the bike pedal, and had severe fractures to his leg and foot, as well as a broken jaw.
