WALLA WALLA — Police have blocked off a section of Bryant Avenue as Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad is on its way to investigate a suspicious device discovered about 1:30 p.m. today.
The object was apparently spotted by a resident who heard it beeping and called police.
According to police radio reports the device, described as a possible pipe bomb, was spotted in a tree in the 500 block of Bryant Avenue. Police blocked off the Bryant Avenue between its intersections with South Division Street and Howard Street.
Police are advising residents in the area to stay indoors until the situation is resolved.
Mark Higgins of the Walla Walla School District said district officials have been notified of the bomb scare, are are taking precautions.
"The police have told us they are evacuating that area Higgins said. "We're studying that area to make adjustments as needed."
Higgins said the school most likely to be affected is Sharpstein Elementary School, especially students who usually walk to school. Higgins said the school is notifying parents.
