FROM A WWPD PRESS RELEASE:
A suspicious item, which resembled a pipe bomb, was found to be just a piece of pipe, connected to what appeared to be the parts from a household smoke detector.
Walla Walla Police were notified at approximately 1:30 this afternoon of a “beeping” noise coming from a tree in the front yard of a residence in the 500 block of Bryant Avenue. The investigating officer observed a 6 inch piece of pipe, threaded on both ends, attached by a wire to a battery powered beeper.
Bryant Avenue was closed to all traffic from Howard to Division Streets until shortly after 5:00 p.m. The Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad responded from the Tri-Cities to investigate. Trooper Don Bancroft donned his protective suit and was able to attach a clamp to the device. It was then pulled from the tree and demolished with a pressure cannon.
