Pipe bomb scare closes Bryant Avenue for hours

WALLA WALLA — A pipe bomb scare led two blocks of Bryant Avenue to be closed off for more than three hours Thursday afternoon.

At around 1:30 p.m. a resident in the 500 block of Bryant reported a beeping noise from a tree, where an officer found a 6-inch piece of pipe that was threaded on both ends and attached by wire to a battery powered beeper, according to Walla Walla police.

Bryant Avenue between Howard and Division streets was closed to all traffic and the Washington State Patrol bomb squad was called in from Tri-Cities.

While wearing protective gear, a trooper attached a clamp to the device, pulled it from the tree and demolished it with a pressure cannon.

The item turned out to be a piece of pipe connected to what looked like a smoke detector.

Bryant Avenue was opened just after 5 p.m.
