SPOKANE — Dayton came up short here at West Valley High School Saturday in Class 2B regional volleyball action.
The Bulldogs were looking for one-of-two state tournament berths that were up for grabs, but Reardan and Asotin ended Dayton’s season.
Dayton opened against the Indians and was swept 25-10, 25-15, and 25-17.
“We played hard and stayed focused,” Bulldog coach Shannon Turner said. “I was pleased with our effort against a strong and experienced ball club.”
The loss to Reardan dropped Dayton into a loser-out battle with Southeast 2B adversary Asotin.
The Bulldogs got off to a fast start as they took set one, 25-20. The Panthers responded and took the next three sets, 25-18, 25-21, and 25-19 to win the match and eliminate Dayton.
“We were focused in set one,” Turner said. “We couldn’t get it going after that and suffered several break downs.”
On the day, senior McKayla Bickelhaupt led Dayton with 22 kills, 37 digs, and seven serving aces. Senior Jessica Tate contributed 16 assists, 17 digs, and was a perfect 13-of-13 from the serving line.
Maddison Mings led the blockers with 15, and put up nine kills, and eight digs. Chelsey Wooldridge dished out 22 assists, and dug out 13 hits. Lexi Ramirez added 15 digs, and Sarah Phillips was 23-of-24 serving with 11 digs.
“We were pretty young,” Turner said of the 2012 Bulldogs. “We made big improvements and will be better next year as we gain more floor time.”
Dayton will miss its only two seniors, Bickelhaupt and Tate, who were both named to first team all SE 2B.
“They were good leaders and played with a lot of heart,” Turner said. “McKayla (Bickelhaupt) led us in kills. Jessica (Tate) was our captain on the floor. They were key components.”
