SPOKANE — Waitsburg-Prescott steamrolled Riverside Christian, 6-1, Saturday to earn District 5/7/9’s third seed to the state playoffs.

W-P fell into the consolation final of the regional tournament after falling to Northwest Christian 4-2 Friday afternoon in Prescott.

Lino Diaz and Ernesto Valdivinos scored twice apiece for W-P in Saturday’s victory, while Luis Garcia and Fernando Torres-Escalante each added a single goal.

Diaz and Valdivinos scored a goal each in the first half to put the lead at 2-0 going into the intermission.

Both Torres-Escalante and Garcia scored unassisted in the second half.

Torres-Escalante, Jesse Albarran, Valdivinos and Jose Paniagua all picked up assists in the victory.

Riverside Christian scored its goal in the 63rd to pull within 5-1.

“We have been inconsistent all year long,” W-P coach Jay Potts said. “We seem to be up now and I hope we stay that way for the rest of the season.”

On Friday night Northwest Christian and W-P battled to a 1-0 draw at halftime thanks to a goal from Torres-Escalante in the 33rd minute.

Northwest Christian pulled ahead 3-2 after sandwiching goals around a Diaz free kick goal in the 69th.

The final goal of the game came in the 81st minute when W-P pulled all of its defenders in a last-ditch effort to tie the game with a corner kick.

Instead, however, the Crusaders used a breakaway to score a final goal in stoppage time.

Waitsburg-Prescott plays in the first round of the Class 1B/2B playoffs Friday or Saturday at an opponent and location yet to be determined.
