SPOKANE — Waitsburg-Prescott steamrolled Riverside Christian, 6-1, Saturday to earn District 5/7/9’s third seed to the state playoffs.
W-P fell into the consolation final of the regional tournament after falling to Northwest Christian 4-2 Friday afternoon in Prescott.
Lino Diaz and Ernesto Valdivinos scored twice apiece for W-P in Saturday’s victory, while Luis Garcia and Fernando Torres-Escalante each added a single goal.
Diaz and Valdivinos scored a goal each in the first half to put the lead at 2-0 going into the intermission.
Both Torres-Escalante and Garcia scored unassisted in the second half.
Torres-Escalante, Jesse Albarran, Valdivinos and Jose Paniagua all picked up assists in the victory.
Riverside Christian scored its goal in the 63rd to pull within 5-1.
“We have been inconsistent all year long,” W-P coach Jay Potts said. “We seem to be up now and I hope we stay that way for the rest of the season.”
On Friday night Northwest Christian and W-P battled to a 1-0 draw at halftime thanks to a goal from Torres-Escalante in the 33rd minute.
Northwest Christian pulled ahead 3-2 after sandwiching goals around a Diaz free kick goal in the 69th.
The final goal of the game came in the 81st minute when W-P pulled all of its defenders in a last-ditch effort to tie the game with a corner kick.
Instead, however, the Crusaders used a breakaway to score a final goal in stoppage time.
Waitsburg-Prescott plays in the first round of the Class 1B/2B playoffs Friday or Saturday at an opponent and location yet to be determined.
