PASCO — Waitsburg-Prescott’s Seth Deal capped his senior cross country campaign with a 13th-place finish here Saturday at Sun Willows golf course in the Washington Class 2B state championship.
Deal clocked 17 minutes and 23.8 seconds over the 5,000 meters to earn 13th out of 129 harriers. Stephen Bottoms, an Onalaska senior, won in 15:48.3.
“Seth didn’t have a good run,” W-P coach Joanna Lanning said. “For whatever reason, it just didn’t come together for him. We were hoping for better as he put in a lot of miles training. I feel bad for him. Seth has proven himself forever, and he’ll bounce back and have a good spring track season.”
W-P sent a full team into the race and finished ninth out of 16 teams with 227 points. Southeast 2B league adversary Tri-Cities Prep completed a three-peat as the Jaguars added the 2012 team title to their 2010 and 2011 championships.
The Jaguars’ Skyler Larson finished third in 16:25.5 and teammate Kelly Smith crossed fifth in 16:55.1 to lead TCP to 53 points.
“We had good races but didn’t finish as well as I hoped,” Lanning added. “EJ (Meserve) even fell down and then got up and PR’d. I had hoped for sixth, but hopefully we’ll come back.”
Freshman Tewedros McDowell was the next W-P harrier after Deal to reach the tape. McDowell finished 38th in 18:01.6. E. J. Meserve took 49th overall in a PR of 18:26.4 for W-P. Jacob Dingfield was 81st in 19:05.7, and Corey Braxton ran a 20:03.3 to earn 103rd.
Trent Hafen and Kevin Kamel rounded out the team scoring for W-P. Hafen ran a 20:48.3 and Kamel came home in 22:00.5.
