SPOKANE — Waitsburg-Prescott’s defense of the 2011 state soccer championship ended Saturday at Whitworth University’s pitch in Spokane.
Northwest Christian, which had beaten W-P twice in three games this season, proved too tough a nut to crack a third time as they outscored W-P 5-1 in the opening round of the Class 1B/2B playoffs.
“They’re a good team,” W-P assistant coach Jay Potts said. “We had our opportunities, our defense just didn’t play well today.”
Ernest Valdovinos opened scoring with a goal on a Rodrigo Gonzales assist in the 15th minute, but NWC answered with five consecutive goals.
“It wasn’t one-sided despite the score,” Potts said. “We started out great.”
Lino Diaz took 10 of W-P’s 19 shots on goal.
W-P (12-4-1) loses four seniors to graduation: Diaz, Fernando Torres-Escalante, Jesse Albarran and Gabe Escalante.
W-P returnes four juniors, including Valdovinos.
“Our junior class is looking good,” Potts said. “We’re young overall.
“We had to play a lot of freshmen this year, so they got good experience,” Potts said. “The future is still bright.”
