Walla Walla County commissioners recently appointed Kevin Smith to a three-year term on the Walla Walla Fair & Frontier Days Board of Directors, said Cory Hewitt, fair manager.
At the October annual organizational meeting the Fair Board elected officers for the 2013 year, including Daryl Hopson as president; Brad Richards, vice president; Linda Miller, secretary; and Pat Reay, treasurer. The Board also includes Steve Harvey, Jamie Kibler, Sam Waldron, Mike Humphreys and Smith.
Commissioners appointed Charles Barron to serve as an ex-officio, non-voting member on the Board.
The Fair and Frontier Days is held every year during Labor Day weekend.
In 2013, the Board will celebrate the 147th Fair & Frontier Days Aug. 28-Sept. 1.
Work is already under way as part of the Board's plan to continue updating the fairgrounds facility and create new events.
As College Place Lions Club's guest speaker, Alan Raguso will talk about issues dealing with diabetes at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
He authored "The Diabetes Slayer's Handbook" and has developed diabetes-reversal techniques that have helped him and others, said Dave Walk, club president.
The presentation is free and will be in the building at Lions Park, 801 S.E. Larch St.
Applications are available for two $1,000 Walla Walla-Columbia School Retirees Association scholarships.
Scholarship grants go to recipients who will student-teach or do internship experiences in an educational setting, said Gordon Taylor in a release.

Walla Walla Sunrise Rotary had an excellent program presented by CASA Program Manager Jane Sporleder, said Rotarian John McKern.
The nonprofit Court-Appointed Special Advocates for Children program is administered by the Walla Walla County Juvenile Justice Center. The program's funding comes from Walla Walla County public funds and private donations.
