Eastern Oregon edges Whitman women

LA GRANDE, Ore. — Whitman College could blame a two-to-one discrepancy at the free-throw line for its first loss of the women’s basketball season.

After all, the Missionaries did outshoot Eastern Oregon University from the field. And they held slight advantages in rebounds, assists and turnovers.

But Whitman coach Michelle Ferenz will no doubt look back at Sunday’s 67-58 overtime loss to the Mountaineers and confirm that the culprit was her team’s woeful shooting from beyond the 3-point line.

The Whits fired up 16 3-point attempts during regulation play and four more in overtime, and connected exactly once for a bone-chilling 5 percent.

The Mounties didn’t exactly radiate from beyond the arc, but their 5-for-19 showing (26 percent) proved to be a major difference in the game.

Of course, Eastern’s 18-for-26 (69 percent) effort at the free-throw line proved to be a big advantage as well. Whitman made 85 percent of its free throws, but the Whits got just 13 chances and sank 11 of them.

Jorie Freeman and Kelsea Hurliman scored 15 points each to lead the Mounties. Chayla Jones led EOU with eight rebounds.

Sarah Anderegg and Heather Lovelace scored 14 points each to pace Whitman. Meghan White was also in double figures with 11 points and snagged a game-high 10 rebounds. Tiffani Traver totaled five assists.

Eastern Oregon improved its season record to 7-2. Whitman takes a 3-1 mark into its next game Friday night at Sherwood Center when Pacific Lutheran University comes to Walla Walla to open Northwest Conference play.
