Last year’s record: 9-15, District 9 runner-up, advanced to regional
Nicole Lambert; Samura Miller; Shelby Smith.
McKayla Bickelhaupt, 5-8, senior wing; Malia Frame, 5-10, senior post; Samantha Harting, 5-10, senior post.
Projected varsity squad
Bickelhaupt; Jessica Tate, 5-8, senior; Courtney Fuller, 5-4, senior; Harting; Frame; Lexi Ward, 5-9, junior; Sarah Phillips, 5-4, sophomore; Lexie Ramirez, 5-6, sophomore; Kaitlyn Andrews, 5-4, sophomore.
Dayton started last year 0-8, but rebounded to win nine games and advance to the Regional round of the state playoffs.
“We’re going to try and build off that.
“Having a year under our belt, we can be more varied in both the half-court and full-court on both offense and defense.
“We moved (Bickelhaupt) off the basketball (as lead guard) and put her on the wing last year to allow her to score more. She was our scoring leader, our best free-throw shooter, led us in assists, and was one of our top three rebounders. She did a lot of different things for us and will be asked to do a lot this year.
“(Defensively), she’s matured and wanting to guard people’s best player.”
With Frame and Harting providing the only height for the Bulldogs, Dayton will have to adjust to defend taller opponents in the paint.
“There are really good post players (in the SE2B League). We’re going to have to be active. If we press, hopefully, they won’t have as long to run their offense, which will allow us to defend (the post). Our guards will have to help in the post and find shooters quickly.
“We’ve got just as good a chance as anybody (in the SE2B League).
“DeSales and Asotin are probably the favorites in the league.
“Most importantly, we want to get into the crossover tournament (the top five teams from the SE2B) with District 7. That gives us a chance to get back to where we were (Regional), and maybe take another step (in the State tournament).”
