WALLA WALLA — Max Smith scored twice Wednesday afternoon as first-place and undefeated Walla Walla Community College posted a 3-0 victory over Columbia Basin in an NWAACC East Division men’s soccer match at Warrior Field.
WWCC, ranked third in the latest NWAACC coaches poll, upped its league mark to 4-0-2 and is 9-0-2 overall. Walla Walla increased its East lead to five points over second-place Treasure Valley.
“We played well,” Warrior coach Chad Bodnar said. “We improved in areas where we needed to improve.”
CBC slipped to 2-3-1 and 5-4-2.
Wednesday’s match was a standoff until the 12th minute. Kentaro Bodzewski delivered a through ball from the mid-field area to Smith, who made the most of his opportunity with a hard shot that eluded Hawks’ goalie Rolando Garcia with 11:02 gone in the first half.
A dazzling individual effort by Bodzewski netted the Warriors’ second goal of the match. Bodzewski claimed possession at the top of the 18-yard box, weaved his way past a trio of CBC defenders, and beat Garcia with point-blank blast that lifted WWCC to a 2-0 advantage at the 18:20 mark.
“It’s one of the best goals I’ve ever seen,” Bodnar said. “His individual work was very special.”
Smith picked up Walla Walla’s final goal when he collected a rebound off an attempt from the top of the 18 by Hugo Monroy. Garcia stopped Monroy’s try, but Smith — stationed on the doorstep — put the loose ball away at 57:41.
“That’s what he’s done for us,” Bodnar said.
