Tigercats hand Pomeroy 66-36 defeat

POMEROY — Five and four proved to be unlucky numbers for the Pomeroy Pirates Friday night during Southeast 1B football action at Lybecker Field.

The Pirates turned the ball over five times while Lacrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus running back Johnathan Holdren scored four touchdowns — two rushing and two receiving — in a 66-36 Tigercats’ victory.

L-W-K tallied 38 of its points off of Pomeroy miscues — four fumbles and an interception.

“That’s too many (turnovers), even if they didn’t convert,” Pomeroy coach Sanford Bates said. “They’re a good enough team that they’ll take advantage. That hurt us the most — turning the ball over against a team of their quality.”

The Pirates, playing without fullback/middle linebacker Austin Reisdorph, tailback Brendan Lueck, and all-purpose performer Kade Snyder due to injury, slipped to 1-2 in league and 2-3 overall.

The Tigercats cashed in the first Pomeroy bobble at the 7:58 mark of the first quarter on a 34-yard run by Holdren. Quarterback Joey Guske hit Sam Harder for the 2-point conversion to give L-K-W an 8-0 lead.

Lacrosse scored three times in the second quarter. Harder dashed into the end zone from 40 yards out, Holdren caught a 26-yard scoring pass from Guske and added a 5-yard gallop to help the visitors build a 30-16 lead by halftime.

Holdren and Harder, respectively, added 2-point runs after the latter two touchdowns.

Guske’s six-point pass to Holdren came six snaps after a Pirates’ fumble.

Kyle Hyer, who rushed for 167 yards on 13 carries, registered Pomeroy’s first-half touchdowns — both in period two. He scored on a 56-yard scamper with 11:48 remaining and caught an 87-yard pass from quarterback Ryan Smith at the 6:44 mark.

Smith added 2-point conversions after each touchdown.

Holdren grabbed a 70-yard touchdown throw from Guske with 7:16 left in the third quarter that ended a 99-yard, six play drive that followed a Pomeroy fumble and put L-K-W up 36-16.

The Pirates’ Wyatt Hyer scored from 1 yard out and contributed a 2-point conversion with 4:24 on the clock, and Smith sprinted 74 yards for a touchdown with 11:03 left in the fourth quarter to make it a six-point game, 36-30.

But on their next series, the Tigercats drove 48 yards in nine plays, which included a pair of fourth-down conversions, to create a two-score margin. Alec Fleming ended the march with a 22-yard rushing touchdown and snagged a 2-point pass from Guske at the 7:06 mark to give L-K-W a 44-30 lead.

Pomeroy fumbled away the ensuing kickoff and the Tigercats took advantage two plays later on a 35-yard TD run by Guske. He tacked on a 2-point run with 6:06 to go to increase L-K-W’s spread to 22, 52-30.

Smith, who rushed for a game-high 250 yards, raced 64 yards for Pomeroy’s final score of the game at the 4:52 mark.

The Tigercats scored twice in the final minute on a Bo Rice rush of 16 yards and a 50-yard interception return by Harder.

“I was pleased with the way the kids played,” Bates said. “We had more intensity. We came out to play football.”

Pomeroy celebrates homecoming this week and hosts Garfield-Palouse on Friday.
