BEND, Ore. — The Deschutes County sheriff's office says a shot apparently fired by a man trying to hunt a deer went zipping over the head of a man working at a Bend, Ore., cemetery and funeral home.
Lt. Kevin Dizney said deputies responded Monday evening to Deschutes Memorial Gardens after an employee reported hearing a shot whiz over his head and hearing a man in the distance shouting something he didn't understand. The worker was not hurt.
Two nearby motels were told to keep guests inside while officers investigated.
Deputies determined that a man at a nearby residence had fired a shotgun round at a deer.
Dizney says 60-year-old Gregory Phipps was arrested for investigation of unlawful use of a weapon, reckless endangering, disorderly conduct and hunting during prohibited hours.
Oregon State police cited a woman at the home for aiding in a game violation.
