Whitman battles to draw with Whitworth, 1-1

SPOKANE — Just when it appeared Whitworth had scored the goal that would claim an important Northwest Conference women’s soccer victory, visiting Whitman tallied the tying goal less than 30 seconds later in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday afternoon.

The Missionaries are now 3-8-2 overall, 2-5-2 NWC, while the Pirates are now 6-5-2 overall and 6-1-2.

Whitman outshot the Pirates 12-1 in the first half.

But none of those shots came from inside the penalty area.

And of the five that were on goal, only two forced Whitworth keeper Andrea Stump to make any kind of a challenging save. She knocked both over the bar.

But the Missionaries had prevented the Pirates from gaining traction in the midfield and that carried through for much of the second half.

Soon after an injury timeout in the 75th minute, Whitworth’s Carly Schilperoort sent a long pass forward to Tiara Pajimola, who chipped the ball over Whitman keeper Emily Davis in the 77th minute.

But even before Whitworth had time to react, Whitman’s Kelsey Roehner chased down a ball along the right sideline and sent a hard cross to Clara Merlino, whose one-touch shot beat Stump for the tying goal.

It was Merlino’s third goal of the season.

Whitworth’s best chance to score again came in the first overtime when Pajimola broke away from the defense, but Davis came out to make the save.

The Missionaries had a chance to score midway through the second overtime, but Hallie Swan’s long shot was tipped over the bar by Stump.

Roehner had a chance as time was running out, but the referee ruled that her shot — which was initially stopped by Stump — did not cross the line before the horn had sounded.

Whitman heads to Pacific Lutheran at noon Saturday, and then plays at Puget Sound at noon Sunday.
