When it comes to small foodie towns, Waitsburg is a chart-topper.
Food & Wine magazine has included the community on its Top Five list of “America’s Best Little Food Towns.”
Waitsburg is included in the magazine’s November edition. Local residents may recall the community hosting a photographer for the publication in August.
The magazine highlights “five burgs” that represent its favorite food towns with fewer than 5,000 people. A “bonus” highlight is Round Top, Texas, with a population of about 90 people.
Waitsburg joins the company of Cooperstown, N.Y.; Water Valley, Miss.; Marfa, Texas; and Guerneville, Calif., on the list.
“From a beer mecca in upstate New York to an art-and-food-lover’s destination in West Texas, these five burgs represent our favorite little (under 5,000 people) food towns in the country. Bonus: A tiny, food-obsessed hamlet of only 90 people,” the intro to the piece explains.
Highlighted specifically from Waitsburg are: Jimgermanbar owned by former Seattle resident and well-known mixologist Jim German at 119 Main St.; Anchor Bar, a “jukebox joint” owned by Food & Wine’s 2009 Winemaker of the Year Charles Smith, whose menu includes four kinds of hot dogs at 128 Main St.; Coppei Coffee Co., which features El Salvador beans from Walla Walla Roastery at 137 Main St.; Bubbles & Chocolate, a new champagne-and-chocolate store where Karen Gregutt chooses the chocolate and her husband, renowned wine writer Paul Gregutt, oversees the sparkling wine selection at 208 Main St.; and La Monarca, a brick-and-mortar extension of the Walla Walla taco wagon at 206 Main St.
