Pioneers hang on for 3-2 victory over Ontario

ONTARIO — Gerardo Robles found the back of the net here Saturday for the Mac-Hi Pioneers to break a 2-2 tie with Ontario. The Pioneers made the Robles’ goal stand up for a 3-2 Greater Oregon League boys soccer win.

“It was a very rough, physical match,” Mac-Hi coach Jose Garcia said. “We got up 2-0, but they came back to tie at 2-2 in the second half before Gerardo scored.”

The Pioneers got off to a good start as Moises Monon scored to put Mac-Hi up 1-0.

Alex Saldana drew an Ontario foul in the penalty box and Juan Martinez converted the penalty kick and Mac-Hi seemingly had command at 2-0.

The Tigers narrowed the gap to 2-1 before intermission and tied the game at 2-2 in the second half.

Robles knocked home the game winner with 15 minutes left and Mac-Hi hung on for the win.

The win improves the Pioneers to a perfect 8-0 in GOL play.

Mac-Hi hosts La Grande Thursday at 5 p.m.
