PRESCOTT — Waitsburg-Prescott fought to a 1-1 draw against Class 2B rival St. George Friday night.
St. George and Waitsburg-Prescott have played each other six times in the past two years, including twice in the playoffs last season. The Dragons, from Spokane, defeated W-P 4-1 earlier this season in the most lopsided game of the series.
“It’s mounting to be a rivalry,” W-P assistant coach Jay Potts said. “Just two good teams going at each other — it was a good game.”
The Dragons scored in the 34th minute to open scoring.
Waitsburg-Prescott struggled to bring pressure in the first half landing only four shots on goal, but dominated possession in the second with 19 shots on the net.
It paid off in the 75th minute when Johnny Escalante crossed the ball into the middle, Aldair Escalante deflected it with his body, and Fernando Escalante-Torres scored from just outside of the penalty box.
“We played much better in the second half,” Potts said. “We kept the ball much more on the Dragons’ side in the second half and controlled the match.”
