ELGIN — Weston-McEwen won its second Blue Mountain Conference league game Friday night, prevailing over Eligin, 42-6, and only losing the shutout on a fourth-and-goal touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Weston-McEwen now stands at 2-2 in BMC play and 2-4 overall after losing their first four games.
Zane Chapman started the W-M scoring with a 27-yard interception return in the first quarter.
Halfback Tyler Peterson scored another touchdown in the opening quarter with a six-yard run.
Peterson led the TigerScots in touchdowns with three on the ground, while quarterback Jacob Ramirez ran for one score and threw for another.
Calvin Thacker was on the receiving end of the 65-yard touchdown pass from Ramirez.
Ramirez’s other completion of the night went for big yardage. It was to Chapman on a 52-yard bomb.
Ramirez was 2-9 on the day with 122 yards through the air, one touchdown and no interceptions.
The TigerScots scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters before being held scoreless in the fourth. Kicker K.J. White was successful in booting home all six extra points.
“That is the second game in a row where we put up big points,” W-M coach Kenzie Hansell said. “We’ve been trying some new formations on offense to make us more dynamic and diverse.”
The TigerScot defense relinquished only 56 yards on the ground and an additional 69 yards in the air.
“Our defense has really been keeping us in every game,” Hansell said. “We just need to keep putting points up on the board on offense.”
After a month on the road for W-M, they will return home next week to host Stanfield for homecoming. It will be followed by a home game against Irrigon before going to Heppner to finish the regular season.
Stanfield is a perfect 6-0 overall, 4-0 in league after beating Heppner for the first time in 24 years Friday.
“Stanfield will be tough,” Hansell said. “They are big, disciplined and well-coached. We need to play the same way. We will need to know our roles, our assignments, not make mistakes and take advantage of our opportunities.”
The TigerScots are currently in fifth place, one spot out of the playoffs.
