POMEROY — Pomeroy bounced back from an opening set loss to Liberty Christian to defeat the Patriots 3-2 here Saturday in Southeast 1B volleyball action.
“It was pretty exciting,” Pirate coach Bruce Crossfield said. “I was pleased that we played more consistent and with more fire.”
After a 25-22 loss, the Pirates took Set 2 25-20 to even the match. Liberty Christian took a 2-1 match lead with a 28-26 win in set 3.
Back came the Pirates to even the match at 2-2 with a 25-23 win in set 4.
“After we lost the third set in extra time, I was pleased with the way we bounced back,” Crossfield said. “We showed resiliency. We were ahead most of the way (in set 4) and held them off at the end.”
Pomeroy pulled out the match win with a narrow 15-13 victory in the deciding set 5.
“We’ve had trouble playing well after winning a set,” Crossfield said. “But, in set 5, we were up and starting to feel optimistic. They came back and got to within 14-13 before we got the last point.”
Mackie Monahan led the Pirates with 16 kills and 13 digs. Savannah Ruark chipped in 14 kills for Pomeroy. Ireland Mayfield set up the Pirate hitters with 35 assists. McKenzie Uto led the Pirate defenders with 19 digs.
Pomeroy hosts Dayton in a non-league match Thursday for senior night and will close out the SE1B regular season at Rosalia Saturday.
A Pirate win at Rosalia forces a three-way tie for the fourth seed to the district tournament. The fourth seed earns an automatic bid to the double elimination district tournament, with the fifth and sixth seed facing an elimination match for entry into the double elimination round.
