YAKIMA — Ernesto Valdovinos’ hat trick provided all the offense Waitsburg-Prescott needed Tuesday night as it defeated Riverside Christian, 3-0, Tuesday in non-league soccer.
“It was a very good game — it was fun to watch, fun to coach,” W-P assistant coach Jay Potts said. “This late in the season we needed a game like this. We may be seeing them again in the playoffs.”
Valdovinos scored his first goal in the 44th minute on a Fernando Torres-Escalante assist to open a 1-0 lead.
It wasn’t until the game was winding down that Valdovinos scored again. He scored off a Lino Diaz assist in the 80th minute and again unassisted in the first minute of stoppage time.
“We were a step off for the first half, and that’s partly due to us and to the fact that we were playing a good opponent,” Potts said. “Riveside’s middles are very good and they were able to disrupt what we wanted to do.”
W-P had 21 shots on goal for the day.
Sergio Gonzales was tested but made 14 saves to hold Riverside Christian scoreless,
“Sergio (Gonzales) had an extremely good day today,” Potts said. “He made some very good saves throughout the course of the day.”
