While celebrating College Place Lions Club’s 50th anniversary, members will also honor volunteerism.
Club President David Walk said folks in the community are invited to nominate a 2012 Volunteer of the Year for College Place.
Nominations will be accepted through Dec. 3 for volunteers whose service benefits that area.
Nominees should have a past history of volunteer work with various groups and a dedication to volunteerism over a period of years.
“Rather than just give a certificate or trophy to the winner, our Lions Club has voted to give $500 to the organization or cause the volunteer supports,” Dave said.
The annual College Place Volunteer of the Year Awards Ceremony will be Jan. 13 in the College Place Lions Clubhouse, 801 SE Larch Ave.
Downloadable nomination forms are available at bit.ly/TQRi0R.
Once completed, it can be sent to the College Place Lions Club, Attention: Volunteer of the Year Committee, P.O. Box 503, College Place, WA 99324 or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
“The College Place Lions Club is grateful to our community partners who help us serve the public. Our members and friends will be contacting College Place residents and businesses to get involved with us in this project,” Dave said. For more details, call him at 200-1114.
Nearly 200 Walla Walla Valley Academy students in College Place spent most of a day helping out in the community.
“Service is one of our core compounds of our curriculum. Today is impact day and our student body is spread across the Valley doing service projects, both big and small from picking up trash to working with the Humane Society, they’re all serving today,” said Brian Harris, WWVA principal, in a news story on KNDO.
Students volunteered at a cemetery, in parks and at a museum, pulling weeds, raking leaves and collecting food for food banks.
Dogs were taken for walks and cats were petted at Blue Mountain Humane Society.
The Christian high school is operated by Upper Columbia Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and Seventh-day Adventist churches in College Place, Milton-Freewater, Stateline, Touchet, Umapine and Walla Walla City, Walla Walla University and Walla Walla Eastgate.
