Shooting, turnovers hurt Wolves in basketball openers

EUGENE — Shooting percentage and turnovers appeared to be Walla Walla University’s most glaring drawbacks following the first two games of the women’s college basketball season.

The Wolves shot an icy 10-for-60 from the field (16.7 percent) and gave the ball away 27 times here Saturday night in a 69-42 loss to New Hope Christian College. Walla Walla opened its season here Friday with a 92-46 defeat at the hands of Northwest Christian, a game in which the Wolves were guilty of 37 turnovers and made 14 of their 54 shots from the field (25.9 percent).

The Walla Walla squad had all of this week to work on those shortcomings before returning to action Friday afternoon against Northwest Indian College in Bellingham, Wash. The opening tip is slated for 2 p.m.

The Wolves continue to play on the road at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, B.C., Saturday night at 7. They return to Bellingham Sunday to take on Northwest Indian College again in another 2 p.m. affair.

Walla Walla won’t play its first home game until Halloween Night, Oct. 31, against Eastern Oregon University. That 7 p.m. clash will be the Wolves’ first against an NAIA opponent.

Dani Carlman led the Wolves offensively Saturday night with an 11-point game. Johanna Uribe added nine points for WWU and Abbey Manzano chipped in with eight.

Chelsea Dyson led four Deacons in double figures with 15 points. Lei Lolohea added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds, Deanna Tupai scored 12 points and Emily Gonzalez 11.

New Hope Christian outrebounded Walla Walla 56-49, with Pernu grabbing seven rebounds to lead the Wolves.

In Friday’s loss, Uribe was the Wolves’ scoring leader with 11 points. Lindsey Shearer paced Northwest Christian with 15 points on a night when no fewer than 13 of the 14 Beacons in uniform contributed points.

The Beacons also held a 53-40 rebounding advantage, led by Kelsey Atkins’ 11.
